Hemp seed in Ayurveda has a long history of use for both religious and therapeutic purposes. Early Ayurvedic literature like the Charaka, Sushruta, and Shargandhara Samhitas make mention of it. It has been used in ancient India from around 2000 BCE and is one of the five sacred plants in the Vedas. Hemp is the subject of a complete chapter in The Ananda Kanda, which includes details on its toxicity, growth, preparation, and use.
The fact that hemp seeds have long been used in Ayurveda may surprise most people. The seeds are a great source of fibre, protein, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are great for your heart and revitalise the body and promote growth (aids in digestion). Hemp seeds have a strong and stabilising influence on the body because they are Tamasic in nature.
